Misfit Gang

April 30, 2014 by Larissa Lamothe

Last year I discovered this group called Social Club, they were releasing their mixtape Summer of George. The cover of the album is what caught my attention (which was a picture of George Costanza from Seinfeld) and I just found it awkward that a Hip Hop group would put that as a cover of their mixtape.  Out of curiosity I downloaded the album to see what this group was about, the album was just what I expected, awkward. The group takes pride in branding themselves as misfits and making music for those who don’t necessarily fit in with the popular crowd. Summer of George prompted to me buy and download all of their previous albums and mixtapes. The two man group, as stated earlier mission is to make music for the misfits, its apparent in all of their albums that they love to have fun with their music. Their random adlibs, outburst, and interesting metaphors grab your attention. This week the duo released their highly anticipated album, Misfit 2. If you’re looking for new music to diversify your playlist, it wouldn’t hurt to give this group a try. They just dropped a video for their latest single, COPS.

Let Me Be Great

April 14, 2014 by Larissa Lamothe

Five words for this current season I'm in..Let Me Be Great Please!
There comes a time where you can't really be bothered with other people's opinions concerning with what you're doing. You have a goal that you have to reach and you have to do what's best for you.

Damascus

April 09, 2014 by Larissa Lamothe

Damascus

In Acts 9, Jesus stopped Saul who was on a mission to imprison those who were believers. In that very moment Saul (whose name was changed to Paul) was instantly changed, in that very moment he let go of the life he was living and made the decision to be fully committed to the new life. Those who are believers all have had a Damascus experience, where in the middle of “your journey” Christ showed up and your life was changed. Throughout the book of Acts, Paul constantly mentions that we wants to have a clear conscience before God. His experience with the Master was so profound that he never wanted to flirt with his old lifestyle. Paul dealt with great hardship throughout his walk but constantly reminded himself that there is a bigger picture, spreading the gospel to those have not heard of Jesus. Paul’s response to his trials and tribulations is implausible.

Often times, when faced with obstacles in our life we revisit old habits that God has delivered us from in order to cope with the situation. When Paul encountered Jesus, not only did his name change, but his perspective changed. Paul now viewed life from a different perspective. His “Yes” to God wasn’t only to save his own life but the thousands that were going to come into contact with from that point on. He couldn’t give in and throw up the towel because there were thousands of souls that were connected to him.

There are many passages in the Bible where people immediately neglected their former life to follow Christ and other passages where immediately people were delivered, transformed and healed. There have been countless times where I asked God to help me with certain characteristics I want to change but never made room for Him to do so. Being totally consumed by our daily activities is the norm, but if we truly want change in our personal lives, sacrifice is a must. His Word alone is enough for change to take place, So what takes us so long to neglect the ways that were leading us towards destruction until He stepped in and rescued us?  The Holy Spirit was given to us as helping aid. There has never been a time where I was caught in a tempting situation, that He neglected me.  I understand struggles can be hard to break but there is a mental process that you have to put yourself through in order to stay free. If you do something for six weeks, studies show that it will become a habit. Whenever I became angry I would force myself to ask God how to handle the situation instead completely losing myself and cursing that person out. Was it a hard task to do? Yes and it still is at times but there was a goal I was trying to reach, (controlling my temper) and I had to force myself to take the hard route versus the easy way out because I now see the big picture.  The change that I encountered was not only just to save my life but to be a witness to tell how Jesus changed everything for the better to for everyone who had the same life experiences that I had and for me

As many times that I have heard and read the story of Paul, it wasn’t until the last time that I read it, that I realized that if Paul can give up his old life then I can do it as well, since we both have the Holy Spirit.

Jumpstarting Your Creativity

March 04, 2014 by Larissa Lamothe

Jumpstarting Your Creativity
(Simply & Effectively)

1. Maximize your limitations.
• What are limitations? Limitations are barriers. They could also be seen as mental chains as ways of thinking that are hard to change. What are some limitations you have that are stopping you from living out your dreams? We often look at our limitations for what they are, and not for what they can push us to do. That's right, limitations are the key to breakthrough. You are more creative when you lack what you need. For example, in grade school when there wasn't
enough green paint to go around your teacher told you that you had two options: wait until the green paint was available or figure out how to make green by mixing the few colors you do have. So you mixed yellow and blue paint to make green. The lack of supplies, made you utilize the little you did have to create something that you needed. Make great use of the little things, it may lead to a great discovery.

2. Collaborate.

• Two brains are better than one. Creative people  are in a world of their own for a reason. Society rejects us because we are peculiar, so we isolate from the popular and gravitate towards those who "understand us". With that being  said, there are a huge number of people running around with these big imaginations but don't have a feasible way of brining to life the imaginative world that exists in their head. Collaboration opens up the door for people to exchange ideas, learn, get inspiration, but most importantly become motivated to step out of their own box. Birds of a feather, flock together.

3. Identity.

• Having a deeper understanding of who you are and what your gifts can accomplish are very essential in jumpstarting your creativity.  One of the main reasons why the "art" that is being produced by the entertainment world is lacking substance, is because there is a huge amount of artists who don't have an identity. When you don't know who you are, you open the door for others to control you and make you their puppets. To have full control and access of the art you express, understand your purpose. Live, breathe, eat, sleep who YOU are. By understanding your purpose, you build a foundation for great creations.

Silent Racism

February 26, 2014 by Daisy Copelin

DOES RACISM STILL EXIST?

February 26th on a dark rainy night a typical 17 year old took what he thought would be a temporary break away from the NBA basketball game. He headed to the nearest 7 eleven store to purchase some ice tea and a bag of skittles to enjoy the game. He left the store with a dark gray hoody on his head to shield himself from the never ending rains drops. Little did he know that that would be his last trip anywhere because he would never reach his desired destination.

What was it that caused this 17 year old with so much life left in him to cross paths with a 28 year old mixed Hispanic male who was a neighborhood watch volunteer?

“SILENT RACISM” is what caused these two to cross paths. Never in a million years did Trayvon Martin believe that he would be the victim of “SILENT RACISM”. A loud bullet silenced his cries for help for an eternity on that fatal night. A young BLACK male walking in the neighborhood was assumed to look suspicious, assumed to be up to no good, assumed to be on drugs just because he was born with a skin tone two shades darker than George Zimmerman.

After months of protests and an alarmingly high response of outrage from the public Trayvon Martin NEVER did get a fair trial. He died that night with so much life left in him while his killer went FREE.

Some may have questioned in times path does racism still exist? Unfortunately it does and has taken on a new subtle form called “SILENT RACISM.” The legacy of Trayvon Martin demonstrates that although we as colored people have come a long way in terms of equal rights we still have a LONGER way to go.

We're Stronger Together

February 25, 2014 by Larissa Lamothe

“We’re Stronger Together”

I attended a conference about two weeks ago. One of the speakers at the conference (Pastor Tamara Bennett), spoke about the importance of unity and that we, as the Body of Christ, are stronger together. Reflecting on the message, the African American community came to mind.

Throughout my entire scholastic career, the notion was given to my peers and I, of whom are African American, that the "white man" is continuously holding us back, and prohibiting us from reaching any type of success. Although that statement to many maybe true, if you look back over the past thirty to forty years, this is far from the truth. Over the past thirty years or so, our biggest enemy hasn’t been Caucasian people, our giant..is ourselves. If you take the time to look at other ethnic groups in America, they work together to keep their community in tact, and look out for one another because they know all they have is each other.

There are a few areas of the culture that we must organize in order to change our minds, and aid the generations to come...

  1. The Home.
  2. The Church.
  3. The Hip Hop Culture

Many people may feel these may not be the most important, but this is not a debate; this is a challenge to further our thinking.

THE HOME, is where the heart is. Home is where our children learn, watch, listen and imitate what they see. They learn discipline, right from wrong, how to be a family, gain morals, and they are trained and shaped to be who their parents have said and declared they are and will be. A solid home, with a sturdy and wholesome foundation, produces well-balanced and stable children. There are few instances where trouble finds our children even in these ideal homes, but for the most part it is one of the biggest if not THE most essential part gearing towards a better future.

THE CHURCH is where faith and family are combined. Church is primarily a hospital for those who are usually hopeless, discouraged and (emotionally) wounded. From the days of slavery to the days of the Civil rights movement, the church has always been a very prominent place in our culture. It was a place for one to gather to escape the violence of this world, gain strength for tomorrow and hope for the future and gain an extended family. For the last twenty years of my life, the church has been overall a mockery within our community because of a rotten few. Differences within denominations has caused division, lack of transparency from the leaders has built a wall between members and ministers and the misunderstanding of prosperity have many turning their backs away from the church. In order to see change in our community the church must unite as one body, care about the needs of the black community and ultimately truly care about reaching the lost.

The Hip Hop culture is where our voices can truly be heard - the return of conscious rap. This generation grew up in the "beef" era of Hip Hop, which I consider the confused era of Hip Hop. In once instance loyalty and unity was preached but at the same time division was encouraged as well. Artists didn't get along for various reasons, whether it be because of  the city which where they were from, down to the clothes and the style of music they chose to do. For years, we witnessed artists attack each other in the public arena all in the name of competition. Little did they realized that if they all came together and joined forces they could have taken over not just the music industry but every other genre in the entertainment world. Fortunately the days of "beefing" are over and artists realize how powerful they are in the entertainment industry. We can take a look today at the culture, and see labels like YMCMB, MMG, Roc Nation, Reach Records, Collision Records, etc who have encouraged artists to come together not only to establish a dynasty but to have a impact on this generation as well. We are suddenly seeing the return of conscious rap, music that sheds light on political, social and economic issues in our culture. If Hip Hop continues to push the idea of unity, demanding change and continue to show how powerful and stronger we are together, we will see a huge change, within our community, our schools, our culture.

There is power in unity, we can further ourselves if we can learn how to work together. No longer can we blame our oppression on anyone else but our selves. If we want to see change within our homes, our churches, our music, our community we have to change our mentality, change the way we operate and change the way we handle one another.  We must realize that we're stronger together.

The Weight Is Over

February 11, 2014 by Valencia Fulmore

I was talking to God one day. I made a vow to him concerning my relationship with him, my body, and the next steps into becoming the person I'm supposed to be. I had the right intentions, my heart was in the right place, and I was fed up with the same stagnating cycles I've experienced for years. What completely blows my mind is that... As "fed" up as I thought I was.... I wasn't really THAT fed up. To be honest.... I was so comfortable. I was comfortable making excuses for why I couldn't do something, (because I'm daily being delivered from laziness). Sometimes we stay in our mess so long, we get used to the odor, the look, the deficiency, the lack, the limiting disorderly disposition of where we are. What we need to begin to realize... Is that the "where we are" can immediately become the "who we are" if we don't choose where we actually want to be. We are a product (sometimes) of our environment... Well most of the time actually. (If you disagree, save that for a debate, but right now I'm trying to make a point, lol). So the other day I made a decision, I am changing everything around me. I'm knocking down the walls, breaking this house DOWN to rebuild on some solid, sturdy foundation.
My problem is discipline. I don't have discipline. I can act disciplined with things, but I am not disciplined. I don't want it to be something I do. I want it to be something, that I am. I've been trying to lose weight, for years!!!!!!! I've tried diets, quick fixes, all that... None of it worked because I was never consistent. Guess what tho?!!!! That ended days ago!!!! Lol. I'm on my way to healthier living.
As an aspiring artist, it is important that I have the look that I want. I love clothes and fashion waaaay too much to not look the way I want. My sound, my look, my message allll have to be in unison with each other. I'm so excited about this, this is personally MY first step to being a WHOLE artist. Join me, Valencia, on the 100 days; 100 pounds journey! I am on a quest with a few of my girls to lose 100 pounds by May 21st, yes I said it... MAY 21ST!! We are working out, and eating right... Going as hard as we possibly can!! If you'd like to be apart comment below, and I'll send you the plan personally! It'll be painful, there will be tears, but KNOW it WILL be worth it! Anything that makes you better is something you should invest your time in. At the end of this journey, you'll be proud enough to know that YOU did it.... You made the decision to become a healthier, fit, and even more beautiful... YOU.

Take Us To Your Home?

February 05, 2014 by Valencia Fulmore

"Cause you always answer calls, when I call... You come. "

The young man above is no stranger to some of us soundcloud heads, but if you DO NOT know who he is, let me get you hip right nooow. Brik liam artist formerly known as Jacoby, is one musical force that I can honestly say people just may not be ready for. I think for the most part it had to be SocialCam where I first heard this guy, got hooked, found him on Instagram, and I was blown away! I don't know what planet this mysterious ingenious dude came from, but best believe... After hearing his voice, you'll probably want to find out & go there for yourself. I've had some time to talk to him every now and then, (often referring to him as my sensei because I have stolen so much from him) lol, and even when being funny and joking around with music... Somehow I still end up learning something. If you go to his insta, (@brikliam), you'll see out-of-this world visuals & countless videos of him singing... With himself... Harmonizing... On PicPlayPost, something I've tried and failed to do! I'm telling you he's nothing to be played with y'all! This cover video of the AMAZING "Calls" by Robert Glasper has been sang effortlessly, with very creative and metaphorically paralleled visuals. ( if that makes sense.) Right now, Brik is working on a creative project, that is to be released on the very anticipated March 6th. During my last talk with him, I asked would it be an EP, a mixtape, or an album... You know being that that type of stuff is what is popular... His response at first was a simple "no".  I thought to myself, actually being an artist, "well maybe putting this project into a specific category would be limiting." And it was just that. He explained further that he wanted this project to be limitless, in a sense of giving him room to be, say, write, and sing however he felt led to do. I even had the privilege to get some deets about his visuals; (if you haven't gotten the clue that this boy is crazy talented in almost like... Every aspect... from this blog, I suggest you start from the beginning or visit his insta, ugh). Anywho, Brik liam is bringing his creativity in allllllll aspects to the table, to inspire... And to give you a glimpse.. Of his mind, his heart, his talent... And lastly his world, the planet we can not reach. :-)

(use headphones) ; my spin on an extremely dope song. playing around . Listen if you'd like. Original song - "Kill Jesus, Praise judas" How backwards are we?

#onlytheFOOLIShdo

February 04, 2014 by Valencia Fulmore
The other day I saw a young man on tumblr that caught my eye. He looked about
20, 21 max. Dude was pretty stylish, fashion forward.... Until I instantly felt
myself go into a frantic indignation...( or maybe I'm being over dramatic, but
you'll understand soon enough). He happened to be wearing a hat with the symbol
of satanism (pentagram), and a cross around his neck. Then me being the
undercover journalist that I am (in my head of course), I read some of the
comments. Many of the comments read pretty cliche, basically along the lines of
"dope bro!", and "where can I get that hat?" . But one stood out challenging
this obvious human oxymoron. (I shall paraphrase) "How are you wearing satanism
and Christianity at the same time?" The response did not really shock me, well
not as much as the "lol" that it began with to make light of the situation... "
Lol, I'm a walking contradiction".

(*GASPS*)

I was livid. I guess because I too once was an indecisive young adult that could
never choose a side, it took me to the MOON!! Contradictions are the leading
disability in my generation. We are constantly saying one thing, doing another.
Advertising one faith, and "believing" another. We praise people who have done
nothing for our generation but push us further into materialistic, hedonistic
thinking, and we kill, violate, or don't even pay attention to those pointing to
the side of right.

What are we doing?

I chose to sing/cover/ rewrite ( you get it, lol) this song because it was
already challenging my thinking and helping me to see the error in the way our
society has pumped us to think. Robotically, we stand outside hours with our
children for sneakers, but we're never seen at parent teacher conference, you
know... Stuff like that. 'Kill Jesus, Praise Judas', I believe is one of the
best thought out, written, and performed songs of all time. It brings light on
contradictions, Christian consciousness, as well as political awareness. In my
rendition, I had to stay within those bounds, but also give my views, and say
what I've been dying to say (I wanted to say more, but I was lazy so I cut the
song short, lol). Honestly man, I'm tired of the contradictions, tired of the
back peddling, and tired of corrupt and foolish thinking. Support, live, and be
what's right.... Not what's popular.

I am completely aware of the " off trackness" being portrayed in this blog, but
my points were made nonetheless. Enjoy the music.

P.S. I sooo made up that " off track-ness thing. Just in case you thought I may
be illiterate or something crazy like that. Love y'all!

Inspiration

January 08, 2014 by Larissa Lamothe

For years when I needed inspiration, something to get my creative juice flowing, I would listen to Kanye. His music would be the only thing I would listen to for weeks, at times, months. Interesting fact about me is that I'm not a huge Hip Hop fan. I never felt like I related to the music aspect of Hip Hop but oddly enough I related to Kanye. Creativity drives me. For years, when the question was asked "what do I want to do when I am out of college", my response would be "Create!". People would stare at me awkwardly, repeat the question as if I didn't understand what they had ask me the first time. I would answer them again, no seriously I just want to create, there isn't a specific job that I long to have, a position that I die to be in, the ability and freedom to create is all I want. There are little babies inside of me, that I just want to be able to give birth to, freely.

I always admired Kanye because of his creativity and his willingness to go against what is popular at the moment. I always felt that he releases things ahead of its time. For example 808's and Heartbreak, people despised it at first because his sound wasn't like anyone else's in the industry but it was great because he was willingly to rebel against pop culture and bring to life the melodies and thoughts that were inside of him. Little did I know that my admiration slowly turned into idolization which ultimately lead to neglecting the One who is responsible for giving me these creative ideas. That is when I realized that I needed to have boundary lines. Having boundaries may seem pointless to many but it's one of the greatest things I've done for myself. The limitations I set for myself, kept me balanced not only as person but as a creative. There should be a boundary line for inspiration. Inspiration, unknowingly can lead to imitation.
